For many years, I’ve wondered about the proper spelling of my favorite treat, donuts… or doughnuts. I’ve gone back and forth and have even taken issue, at certain points, with the doughnut spelling, because, well, I grew up on Dunkin’ Donuts and they must be right. Right? Well for National Doughnut Day (can you see where this is going?) I’ve decided to find out, once and for all, how to spell the ring shaped cake we all love so dearly.

Given that all it took was a quick Google search, I’m a little embarrassed that I’d hadn’t done this before. (All those wasted years of wondering!) Either way, the proper spelling, even here in the United States, is doughnut. Although, apparently, donut dates back to the 1800’s and became popular in the late 20th century with the rise in popularity of, you guessed, Dunkin’ Donuts.

So we’re all right? Who cares. Let’s just eat some already.
