I’ll admit I was skeptical at first — I’ve had some not-great sugar-free candy in my life — but their sweet fish (basically Swedish fish), gummy bears, and sour buddies I tried when the company sent me a few samples were all surprisingly good. No chemical-y aftertaste and only 3 grams of sugar for the entire bag.
To add to your better-for-you-candy-checklist: Each type is non-GMO, gluten-free, non-dairy and soy, and they don’t contain sugar alcohols, so it’s a good bet for trick-or-treaters with food allergies or sensitivities. The fish and sours also happen to be plant-based, meaning no gelatin for you vegans.

I will say that Smart Sweets do contain an almost alarming amount of dietary fiber — 28 grams per bag. It didn’t cause me any, ahem, issues, but if you or your kid have a delicate stomach, you might not want to eat the whole bag at once. Not that you’d ever do that with candy, amiright?
